Dear Entrepreneur: Online Marketing and the importance of diversifying sources of traffic: One of the most important things an online entrepreneur must do is to seek out various sources of traffic for their website. It is not wise to rely on one major source of traffic alone. If 80 percent, or even 50 percent, of your traffic comes from a single source, you may want to consider looking for other sources of traffic. Just like traditional businesses that rely on a single customer, losing that main source of visitors will mean a significant setback for the business. Getting traffic is extremely important to an online business (you may think your business in not an online business.... If that's what you are thinking, then you haven't upgraded with the times!). Every marketer should explore all possible avenues to get traffic and minimize dependence on a single source. But what happens if your traffic dries up? Losing traffic is an online marketer's nightmare. With traffic gone, you will find your revenues dwindle. Sales come far and few in between. You will find yourself scrambling where to get visitors to your website and customers for your business. As they disappear, so does your income. So what can you do to make sure that you don't lose your traffic and continue to create new customers? I. Have a marketing plan, or ride along on someone else's It need not be a double-spaced thesis like document. Just grab a notebook, and start writing various avenues you can and should tap to reach your audience -- and the exact steps you required to do it. Add some timelines for better planning. If you don't feel like doing that, then jump on board with someone who is more enthusiastic about marketing than you are. II. Know all your options. It is important to be informed of all possible marketing options for your business. Many home-based online entrepreneurs have blinders on their eyes with regards to Internet marketing. They think that getting customers from friends & family is the way to go! (It is still a great option, but how many friends and family members must you get in your business to create a six and seven figure income?!) III. They either do not know what marketing options are out there for them, or they are not willing to look for ways to spread the word about their business. Some, also, do not spend money on marketing, thinking that all they need to do is start a business and people will come. Still others simply do not like to be bothered with all the details that online marketing entails. So what's the solution? Start creating more traffic! You used to go out there and find them! What if they could now find you too? You can be ahead of one of the most amazing changes in the way marketing is done....
