Is your resume marketable?

A quick scan of the classified ads confirms that business
intelligence, and data management in general, is a hot job market.
You probably know that, too. But when the time comes to switch jobs
-- are you confident that you have a marketable skill set? And, just
what is a marketable skill set these days?

The process of researching and developing the right skills for your
desired job isn't always easy. In an interview with DAMA leaders,
we've learned that it's especially tough in the data management
industry. But, it's clearly a challenge best tackled long before
you're scrambling to find a new job, so you have time to do research,
think about your goals, develop additional skills or get required
certifications.

So, Kathryn Marquis, assistant editor, recently called on Jennifer
Hay of TDWI to find out her advice for developing a business
intelligence career. In the podcast, Business intelligence jobs and
certification trends, Hay lays out processes and tips for assessing
your skills and determining a career development plan.

"A well-rounded skills development plan involves elements of
research, reading, formal education -- either in the classroom or
online -- and practical experience that can be gained either through
job opportunities or volunteer work," Hay said.

If that sounds like a lot of work -- consider the potential payoff.
Being strategic and proactive with your career planning can lead to
you getting that dream job with the triumvirate of perfection: the
ideal role at the right organization with great compensation.
