Psych 101 and data governance

I've met people who say they work in IT because they prefer to deal
with machines instead of people. Hopefully, those people aren't
looking for a career in data management, which increasingly requires
people-skills, along with technology skills. This is especially
obvious in data governance -- a discipline that's been around for a
while, but is recently getting much more attention, thanks to master
data management, business intelligence and, in general, the
epiphanies some organizations are having about their data. ("Hey, if
we get our data in order, we could actually use it to make more
money!")

But that epiphany may be the easy part. Get into a data governance
project and you find out just how attached people are to their data.
Working out the decision-making and oversight processes of corporate
data is much easier said than done. Data governance requires
diplomacy, political discussions, process changes and culture shifts.
I've heard a psychology degree doesn't hurt.

Suffice to say, it's a hot topic. In addition to being regularly
