700 watt-hours of electricity per day enough to light a 100-watt bulb

that to as little as 128 watt hours per day. When daily power generation
is down to less than 400 watt-hours, the rovers suspend their driving on

[0]mikesd81 writes that the Mercury News reports that scientists at UC
Davis have discovered that some eels have [1]an extra set of jaws deep in
their throats that launch forward into their mouths to help pull prey in.
"'It looks like a funny pair of forceps with curved sharp teeth,' said
evolutionary biologist Rita Mehta, lead author of the research, which
appears Thursday in Nature. Before the discovery, scientists thought that
all aquatic predators swallowed their prey using suction. By dropping the
lower jaw and creating a flow of water into their mouths, they draw in
the prey. The two species of moray eels studied by Mehta and Wainwright
are the first examples of an alternative feeding method. Instead of
sucking, one of these eels bites its prey with its primary set of teeth.
It then draws the second set of teeth into its mouth by contracting long
muscles. The secondary jaws clamp down on the prey, allowing the eel to
move its primary jaws forward in a gulping motion to take in more of the
prey. The two sets of jaws take turns until the whole animal has been
swallowed." mikesd81 adds a link to a YouTube [2]video of an eel eating,
noting "If you look closely right around 34 seconds you can see what
looks like the other set of jaws chewing."

[0]Hal_Porter writes to let us know that the third-largest NAND chip
maker, Hynix, has announced they have stacked [1]24 flash chips in a
1.4mm thick multi-chip package. It's not entirely clear from the article
whether the resulting 48-GB device is a proof of concept or a product.
The article extrapolates to 384 GB of storage in a single package,
sometime. Hal_Porter adds: "It's not clear if it's possible to write to
them in parallel if so the device should be pretty damn fast. The usual
objection to NAND flash as a hard drive replacement is lifetime. NAND
sectors can only be written 100,000 times or so before they wear out, but
wear leveling can be done to spread writes evenly over at least each
chip. I worked out that the lifetime should be [2]much longer than a
typical magnetic hard disk. There's no information on costs yet frankly
and it sounds like an expensive proof of concept, but it shows you the
sort of device that will take over from small hard disks in the next few
years."

[0]coondoggie writes "A new technique to save aging satellites promises
to save millions of dollars by [1]extending the life of communications
spacecraft. A process developed by researchers from Purdue University and
Lockheed Martin has already saved $60 million for unnamed broadcasters by
extending the service life of two communications satellites. In a
nutshell the technique works by applying an advanced simulation and a
method that equalizes the amount of propellant in satellite fuel tanks so
that the satellite consumes all of the fuel before being retired from
service. Some aging communications satellites are each equipped with four
fuel tanks. If one of the tanks empties before the others, the satellite
loses control and should be decommissioned, wasting the remaining fuel in
the other tanks."
