1. What's up? Hello there, This week HP announced the acquisition of Neoware and a few weeks ago announced a partnership with Thinprint to incorporate the clients for its t5530 and t5135 series. Together with Thin Client vendors offering more and more VDI support in their terminals, things are heading in the right direction. It's going to be an interesting upcoming year for the application delivery market. Microsoft has released another June beta of their Windows Server 2008 which now includes IIS 7 so it seems to be getting pretty close to RTM as all the stuff is in it now. With Vista not being the success Microsoft has hoped for, I am curious to see how Server 2008 will take off. So much for now! Catch you later! Doug Brown Gives Nod To SecureIDA Publishing & Security. QUESTION: Stefan, I am hearing a lot of buzz around VDIs lately. Is VDI something that can help my Terminal Server environment in any way? Regards, Buzz Bert ANSWER: Dear Bert,
You are correct. VDI is the latest buzzword in the application delivery market. Do not let yourself get all hyped up just yet. It's all early bird stuff, but rest assured that it will take off in the future. For now VDI is basically your best solution for creating environments which you can offer to guest consultants, temp workers or for locations where you cannot install a normal PC. Have a bunch of VDIs running to facilitate, and see how it works out.
Just don't run out to buy a SAN and a bunch of VMware licenses to set up your entire network with VDIs before thorough testing and learning the benefits and drawbacks of this technology.
(For those of you unfamiliar with VDI it stands for Virtual Desktop Interface and it's a remote desktop session pointing to an XP or Vista instance. It can be a regular XP client machine, or a VMware instance running XP Pro on the network. The client can be a normal desktop or a thin client device.) 4. 5. Rumors on the SBC Space What's new this month? February 27, 2008 is the date to keep in mind. That is the date set for the release of Windows Server 2008. (Together with Visual Studio 2008 and SQL Server 2008 for those interested). This was announced at the worldwide partner conference earlier this month. Interested in an overview of the differences between Windows Server 2003 SP1 and Windows Server 2008? Make sure to check out this (pretty big) document from Microsoft on the matter here. The team from CTRL+ALT+DEL in Australia has done it again. This time it's a replacement tool for the delprof utility in the resource kit. They have come up with their own version called Remprof. REMPROF has the ability to delete user profiles on the local machine based on age, username, or SID association. Check it out here. And last but not least, is Project Mobius Beta 2 from Jason Conger. This tool has been made to migrate Citrix farms, instead of creating temporary environments, just move it all the way. If you need to migrate Citrix environments, make sure to check it out here.
