The Biggest Security Threat of All

News headlines flash: Bell probes theft of personal information on 3.4 million, Personal Records Lost, Bank Security Breach, TJX lost up to 45.6m card numbers…the list goes on.

We all protect our networks with firewalls and surround ourselves with spyware and anti-virus tools to prevent these vulnerabilities. However the biggest threat of all often goes unnoticed…employees.

Recent reports reveal that the average employee spends 20% of his time on the internet for personal business or entertainment.    The cost to companies for unproductive work time can be staggering.  Many companies have guidelines in place to curb this misuse of time however these are often difficult to monitor.

Applying restrictions to Internet access on servers is also a common practice however this can be detrimental to the company business by limiting access to customers and the competition.  Web security needs to achieve optimal protection without negatively impacting the end-user experience or significantly increasing administrative effort.

What then can you do to protect your network from the vulnerabilities created from employees?

The concerns of uncontrollable surfing of the web are discussed  in “Maximizing Security and Performance for Web Browsing: the Challenge for Business “ from Sophos.  In it you will also find a check list for web security.  This white paper is an excellent read and a real eye opener.
