How to have useful, effective Q&A sessions
[by Hannah Smalltree]

This week, I posted a new Q&A this week with Gartner analyst John
Radcliffe discussing how to sell master data management internally to
business people:

I started thinking about the secrets of effective interviews. I know
that many readers need to conduct interviews often, in order to
collect system requirements or build business cases. But as you may
have learned, interviews can be very fruitful or a frustrating waste
of time. Here are some reporter's tips for effective Q&As:
Never ask yes or no questions -- you'll get a yes or no answer
(that's often useless). Instead, ask open-ended questions that start
with "What...?" or "Why...?" or "How...?"
Ask basic questions, even if you think you know the answer -- you
might uncover something interesting. In an interview, master
negotiator Herb Cohen described this tactic as adopting "the low key
pose of calculated incompetence." Read the Q&A to learn why he
recommends that technique:

Do your homework before the interview. Research makes for more
effective interviews. Your questions will be better, which can mean
better answers. Though, as above, use your research to frame your
questions, and never assume anything.
Don't dominate the discussion. Some TV interviewers can get away with
that, but in most interviews, your job is to collect information --
even if you have an opinion or related story to share.
SearchDataManagement.com has even more inspiration. We have some
sample question ideas in articles such as:

And of course, you can always send questions to our panel of industry
experts, via our Ask the Expert section:

Are there any other Q&A style articles you'd like to read -- on a
particular subject or with a certain person? Any tough questions you
want us to find answers to? Send me an email and let me know. Happy
interviewing and have a great week!
