Newsflash:  Everything the interviewer tells you might not be true!

While you might be inclined to accept everything he/she says at face value, beware! The company could be feeding the candidates some false information as a bargaining ploy. For example, the employer might tell you that the position you want falls into a particular salary bracket. He/she says that they cannot possibly go higher than X amount of money, because, well, it’s the rules, and there are no exceptions— You know, “company policy.”

“No exceptions, right? Well, don’t fall for this one! There are almost always exceptions, and you can prove to the interviewer that you’re going to be one of them! Think of the extra bonus material you have on your resume—your qualifications, experience, special training—and think about what makes you not only a unique candidate, but the best one for the job. Get creative and work together with your prospective employer to find a way around those policy roadblocks.
