NATIONAL MEDICAL ASSOCIATION INSTALLS NEW PRESIDENT AT ANNUAL MEETING IN HAWAII

Installation of Nelson L. Adams III, M.D., at NMA Convention

Honolulu, HI (BlackNews.com) - Nelson L. Adams, III, M.D., of Miami, Florida was installed as the 108th President of the National Medical Association (NMA) Annual Meeting in Hawaii August 4th through August 9th. The NMA is the nation's premier organization for African American physicians.

Before being elected NMA president Dr. Adams, a Howard University alumnus, served as President of the local and state NMA societies in Florida and served as Vice President, Secretary of the House of Delegates, and member of the Board of Trustees of the NMA. He is also is past Chairman of the Executive Committee of the Greater Miami Region of the National Conference on Christian and Jews.

Currently Dr. Adams is the chairman of the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology at Jackson North Medical Center and President of N.L. Adams, M.D. and Associates. In addition, he is president and Chairman of Access Health Solutions (AHS), a managed care company providing services in 26 Florida counties.

In his acceptance speech Dr. Adams told his colleagues "we are the keepers of a sacred trust." Our goals include: promoting optimal health and access to healthcare; eliminating racial disparities, and we intend to increase capacity building; including partnering with grass roots organizations. He also declared the HIV/AID crisis in the African American community a "state of emergency." At the annual meeting, the NMA called for the government to provide funding for universal testing to stem the tide of HIV/AIDS.

"I think he's focused and has great resolve to make things happen," said NMA Executive Director Dr. Mohammed Akhter. He adds, "We are poised to play a major role in the nation's health policy and in making this country not only the richest nation in the world, but the healthiest nation in the world."

Pediatrician, Dr. Mark Wade of Saddle River, New Jersey described the new president as "a man of commitment, integrity, and compassion...a real leader in medicine."

The new president is pleased with the recent bill passed by Congress to provide insurance to children, but he says his organization has an obligation to make sure it comes to fruition. He adds "access is not enough."
