CONTACT: Philadelphia, PA (BlackNews.com) - American Cities Foundation has received partial funding from the SBA to bring economic development to the West Philadelphia area. The project, named RISE ("Reaching and Impacting Small Entrepreneurs"), is a small business initiative directed at the creation and retention of businesses in the underserved West Philadelphia area. American Cities Foundation will intervene on behalf of small businesses in lower income areas that need the technical assistance and the resources required to make them successful and solvent enough to move to the next level. RISE will also implement outreach programs to identify potential new business owners, including transitional populations such as ex-offenders and welfare-to-work participants. "We recognize the importance of locally-owned businesses for healthy, stable neighborhoods," stated Sandra Dungee Glenn, President and CEO of American Cities Foundation. American Cities Foundation recently named Bernadine Hawes as the Project Director for the small business initiative. Ms. Hawes has set aggressive goals for the RISE project over the next year. She also has made it a priority to utilize the resources available in the community thereby providing economic opportunity in Philadelphia at all levels. Bernadine Hawes has pledged to achieve measurable improvement in the RISE target areas. She notes, "I am delighted to be hired as the architect for this small business initiative. RISE can serve as a model for other local communities as well as have a national impact. Too often we forget about the under-represented and their importance in the overall picture of building a sustainable urban community. Economic empowerment requires that everyone in the community is uplifted or economic empowerment is never achieved." "This project is part of American Cities Foundation vision to advance an agenda to empower urban residents while revitalizing neighborhoods and cities and could have a long term and broad implication for urban areas across the country." "The Foundation focuses on implementing these types of programs that can be used as models to create success stories across our city and our nation," continued Glenn. For more information on the RISE project and/or how to participate, contact Bernadine Hawes at 215-476-8091, x121.
