CONTACT: Los Angeles, CA (BlackNews.com) - The National Urban League's annual convention in St. Louis was given a powerful boost and consistent theme music with the addition of Dashaun "Mr. Quick" Evins, a traveling DJ/Entertainer who provided music in the interactive exhibit hall of the convention, as well as during the evening concerts, club events and after-party for the conference-ending Whitney M. Young Awards Gala. Mr. Quick delivered the background for each day of corporate presentations, entertainment (including UniverSoul Circus and HBCU marching bands) and speeches in the Exhibition Hall; the hype music in between sets by such evening performers as Chante Moore, Kenny Latimore, Kelly Price and Shirley Murdock; and the after-party dance music each evening. According to Elvin Dowling, vice president of the Urban League, "Mr. Quick set the tone for each of our evening events and kept the crowd in the exhibition hall energized. He was a crucial portion of our convention's overall success. I've never seen a deejay do what he did." Mr. Quick kept the energy high during the day and evening by creating a musical tapestry from which everyone could pull a personal connection, no matter how young or old. "The bottom line is that there is good music that comes from every generation," said "Mr. Quick." "You have to be able to tap into that and still play a wide cross section of songs, so that younger people are dancing to older music and older people nod their heads to newer music." For some, deejaying is all about playing current hits in sequence. But there is a vastly divergent approach for deejays who are also entertainers. For Dashaun "Mr. Quick" Evins, deejaying is all about creating an atmosphere using the mood of music to set the tone of an event. Mr. Quick takes the temperature of the crowd and responds with an aural assault to get the people dancing if the event is club-oriented, or with a blanket of sound and hype if the event includes a daytime convention presentation. "I look at the crowd and play a few records to see what they respond to," says Mr. Quick. "And if the majority of the people aren't responding, I change to mood to get them back. But, really, once I get a crowd vibing with me, I won't let go, whether it's a dance floor or a convention floor." On Thursday night, convention party-goers and local club professionals alike were surprised and delighted that Mr. Quick was doing far more than deejaying--he was also entertaining. By Friday evening, Mr. Quick made it clear that he is more than a deejay, but a "DJ Entertainer." While the crowd took seats in preparation for Chante Moore and Kenny Lattimore, Mr. Quick delivered music from the theme song of Black life in contemporary America and hyped the crowd to the point where the aisles were filled with people dancing. Mr. Quick has already been tapped to deliver the music for the Urban League's 2008 National Convention, the premier networking, recruiting and issues conference for African-American professionals nationwide. According to Dr. E. Lance McCarthy, Executive Director of the Metro Orlando Urban League, "We want to keep the energy level high during the day and keep the people dancing and having a good time in the evening. For that mission, Mr. Quick is our man." Mr. Quick's current itinerary includes the 25th Annual God's Woman's Conference in Palm Springs, CA (Hosted by Pastor Charlyn M. Singleton, featuring Bishop T.D. Jakes, Reverend Jackie McCullough and Beatrice Gardiner) and the Far West Regional Convention of Alpha Kappa Alpha, Sorority, Inc., in addition to weddings, family reunions and other events across the nation. Mr. Quick has been deejaying and entertaining for twenty-three years and averages 100 to 125 events per year, internationally and cross-culturally.
