Aug. 9, 1944: After considering a squirrel and a chipmunk, the U.S. Forest Service and the Wartime Advertising Council unveil a new mascot, replacing Bambi, in the campaign to prevent forest fires. They call him Smokey Bear. Eight years later he gets a middle name, "The," to fit the rhythm of a song.
