CONTACT: WRITER: Clemson, SC (BlackNews.com) - The most recent issue of the prestigious Reading Research Quarterly featured an article written by Distinguished Clemson University Professor Lamont A. Flowers that offers new ways for researchers to examine African American students' reading achievement. "The purpose of this article is to convey some critical and less familiar areas of research that may provide teachers, graduate schools of education, and scholars with information to better understand the reading achievement gap," said Flowers, Distinguished Professor of Educational Leadership and Executive Director of the Charles H. Houston Center for the Study of the Black Experience in Education in Clemson University's Eugene T. Moore School of Education. In the article, Flowers highlights six promising areas of research and related educational practice: standardized testing, teacher quality, after-school programs, parent involvement, reading and study skills, and computer games and simulations. "Addressing the reading achievement gap is one of the most important issues in education today," said Flowers. According to Flowers, reading researchers need to continue to examine how standardized testing affects reading achievement for African American students. Research is also needed to consider the possible range of explanations for test results. Reading researchers are also encouraged to analyze the extent to which a teacher's prior knowledge of the racial gap in reading affects African American students in the classroom. In the article, Flowers also cites the importance of examining how African American students spend their time studying. He suggests that one component of this research should identify which particular learning strategies best support the development of reading skills for African American students. The article was published in the July/August/September issue of Reading Research Quarterly by the International Reading Association.
