                                                      STORY   BEHIND   THE   SONG

Now and then you’ll hear a songwriter say they have not idea where a certain song came from....it just happened.  According to Bill Anderson, “Must You Throw Dirt In My Face” was one of those tunes!

Bill commented, “That’s another one of those songs that I really don’t know where it came from. But it’s one of my favorite songs that I’ve ever written. The Louvin Brothers almost didn’t record that song. I really wasn’t all that sold on the song. I really think that if I hadn’t gone to the recording session that day, I’m not sure that song would have ever been recorded. Charlie really wanted to record it but Ira didn’t want to do it and Ira started trying to rewrite the song  and Charlie kind of put his foot down. I just kind of stood there. But I really think had I not been there that day, it never would have happened. I think maybe they were a little embarrassed not to record it because I had stayed there all day and it was the last song on the session. So they did it.”

The Louvin Brothers’ Capitol single “Must You Throw Dirt In My Face” made the country charts November 17th, 1962 and peaked at # 21.  It was Ira and Charlie’s last charted song as a duet and was on the charts for 6 weeks.

LETTERS  FROM  SUBSCRIBERS:

Dear Doug

A report for your/our readers: I WAS THERE Sat night at the Opry when Porter Wagoner's 50th Opry anniversary was celebrated. It was almost like  a very special church service. Porter, Dolly, Marty Stuart and

Patty Lovelace were simply magnicent, as was the general tone and ambiance of the hour. Everybody

"outdid themselves" and it was a special reminder that that period of our industry  remains very, very special.

Doug I think that your answer to Myron in Calif. was right on the money as everyone wants to tell you how to run your web site but if they are sure of their selves so much they should start their own web site.

I would also like to thank Bill Morrison for REMEMBERING GRANT TURNER as he was a TRUE GENTLEMAN AND LEGEND. He was always giving a COMPLIMANT TO ALL THE PEOPLE HE KNEW. I had the great pleasure to meet him at the Grand Ole Opry a few years before he passed from this life and consider it a honor as I grew listening to him broadcastin on WSM the GRAND OLE OPRY. I have stated before and will again as I always look forward to readin your new page COUNTRY CLASSICS EVERY DAY.

Doug:This Myron who complained about Vern Gosdin must be a very unhappy person. Anyone who can't find something to complain about except when a song was popular can't be all there. I mean , Vern Gosdin is one of the greatest singers ever, period. He has a fantastic voice no mater what decade he recorded. You keep doing the newsletter the way you want it done and I'll keep reading it everyday. Thanks for all the information you supply us with. It's great that you do this.

“Country Classics ~ Music From The Heart”

   By: Bill Morrison

Quote:  “I love singing. It’s all I ever wanted to do. Beyond the satisfaction I get from singing … money is a big motivator. I like nice things. I like to give my kids and grandkids nice presents. In terms of what entertainment I like, I love sports, especially football. I also like to gamble a bit. I like watching television. I like going out to dinner almost every night with a large group of family and friends. I like picking up the check, and I’m able to be that generous guy because I have been blessed with such an amazing career.  –George Jones

Who Am I? I was country music’s first million selling recording artist. I was inducted into the Country Music Hall of Fame in 1981.

Richie Valens was one of the featured acts on the ill-fated “Winter Dance Party” tour of 1959. He won a coin toss with guitarist Tommy Allsup, to see who would get the last seat on the plane with Buddy Holly and The Big Bopper. Richie won the coin toss and said… “Man, that’s the first time I ever won anything.”  --Richie Valens

Chet Atkins played on the Grand Ole Opry for decades, even hosting his own portion of the show at one point in time. However, he was never invited to become a member of the Opry. No, I don’t know why…neither did Chet.

Song Of The Day:  “Wolverton Mountain” recorded by Claude King, and written by Merle Kilgore and Claude King, hit the Billboard Country Chart in 1962. The Columbia single charted on May 5th, and remained on the charts for 26 weeks, 9 of those weeks at #1. This was Claude’s third chart single.

Johnny Cash’s single “Ring of Fire” became the first country song to go to #1 on the Pop charts (January 13, 1964).

Tammy Wynette and George Richey were married on July 4, 978. This was Tammy’s fifth marriage.

Dolly Parton and Porter were named “Vocal Duo of the Year” at the CMA Awards Show in 1970. This was the first year this award was presented. Other nominees included Bill Anderson and Jan Howard, Johnny and June Carter Cash, Merle Haggard and Bonnie Owens.

Remembering A Country Music Legend:  Bonnie Owens 1932~2006

Born Bonnie Campbell in Blanchard, Oklahoma, October 1 1932, her family moved to Arizona, where Bonnie began her music career in her early teens. Bonnie joined Buck Owens in a band called Mac’s Skillet Lickers, and they toured throughout the southwest. Bonnie and Buck were married when Bonnie was fifteen years old. They had two sons, Alvis Alan a.k.a. Buddy Alan, and Mike. After moving to Bakersfield the couple split, and Bonnie began a solo career recording first for Marvel Records, and then Tally. She charted three singles on Tally Records in 963-64, the third hit was a duet with Merle Haggard called “Just Between The Two Of Us.” Bonnie became a featured member of the Merle Haggard Show, and the two were married on June 28, 1965. Tired of working the road constantly, Bonnie filed for legal separation, and finally in 1978 they were divorced. In spite of the divorce they continued to be friends, and worked together until Bonnie became ill. Merle says that Bonnie was his all time favorite singing partner, and that she raised Merle’s children, and loved them like they were her own. Bonnie Owens died as the result of Alzheimer’s disease on April 25, 2006 at the age of 73. Bonnie now rests beside Buck Owens, at the Greenlawn Southwest Cemetery, Bakersfield, California, in the Owens family mausoleum.

SONGS  FOR  LITTLE  HELLS

                  By: Jack Blanchard

My songs are bipolar... either way upbeat... often to the point of slapstick comedy, or way down in the dumps.

I have tried to explain this to people who have asked, but I never got it quite right.
Let me try again. I've been in some hopeless places, and humor was my defense against fear and depression.
I guess that shows up in my funny material. When I write the real downers,
I’m mostly writing from personal experience, and I’d like to think I’m speaking for the people
who are currently living in those little hells. Maybe my words can make them think about getting out.

Sometimes we live in mind prisons that look real, but maybe we can break out if we’re not afraid to take a chance.
Leaving the rut we're used to is seldom easy. Prisoners can get attached to their cells.

Here’s a song I wrote about a couple who are going through the pain of a big life change.

Listen to the song here:
http://www.kokosuniverse.com/avi/jm/wma/second_tuesday.htm

"SECOND TUESDAY IN DECEMBER."

(He sings)
Second Tuesday in December, icy rain is falling down
I took the bus out to the city line, and then I watched it turn around.
Now as I walk down past the junkyard by the closed-up drive-in show
I realize that really leaving is the only way I'll ever go.

(She sings)
It was the seventh of September, nineteen hundred sixty nine
95 degrees and rising, we crossed the Pennsylvania line.
We paid a judge our last ten dollars to bless us with his legal seal.
I guess that putting love on paper doesn't always make it real

(Together)
Second Tuesday in December, icy rain is coming down.
All the snow that's left from Monday lies gray and frozen on the ground
It's hard to understand this feeling that a part of me is gone
Second Tuesday in December... Looks like winter's coming on.
