pirated copies of Windows by sending in a dummy customer to ask for a
copy of Windows to be installed on their PC. The dealers claim that they
are promoting MS software in this way. One retailer said: 'Since we are
are not charging anything extra for installing the software, it means
that we are actually not trading in pirated software. For us this is just
a sewa (selfless act) that we are offering to our customers. Besides, the
pricing of their operating systems is way too high for the Indian
markets.'"

Ilgaz notes that The Register has [0]posted benchmark results from Oracle
11i running on four 4.7GHz Power6 chips. Quoting: "The speedy chips
confirm IBM's boasting that Power6 would arrive near 5GHz. They also show
that IBM's customers have a lot to look forward to in terms of raw
performance." Rumor has it that the Power6 chips will be announced on
Tuesday.

APCMag.com has posted an interesting piece looking at [2]the dark side of
Google's offer. Not least is in its reinforcing of the attachment people
have to their ISP's email address, making it harder to change ISPs if a
better deal comes along."

from Microsoft, I and many others are finding that content available on
television is now completely unwatchable from Media Center. The message
states: 'Restricted Content: Restrictions set by the broadcaster and/or
originator of the content prohibit playback of the program on this

and, in my case, Braveheart on AMC are among the many selections now

Recently a pretty amazing video surfaced that used [0]clips from Disney
films to explain copyright law. It was created by Eric Faden of Bucknell
University and must have taken an insane amount of time to assemble. Now
you have to wonder how long before someone gets sued over it. Also here

[0]todd450 pointed us to a nifty [1]visualization of Wikipedia and
controversial articles in it. The image started with a network of 650,000
articles color coded to indicate activity. The original image is
apparently 5' square, but the sample image they have is still pretty
neat.

An anonymous reader writes "In an addendum to the recent noises by
Microsoft about Linux, InformationWeek blogger Alexander Wolfe has turned
up an interesting list of [0]who owns U.S. trademarks on the word
"Linux." Yes, Linus Torvalds does indeed have the trademark as far as
software is concerned. But Swiss company Rosch owns "Linux" for use with
laundry detergents. Interestingly, both Pogo Linux and United Linux have
abandoned their trademarks (Wolfe speculates that's because of Linus's
lawyers). But Finite State Machines of New Mexico owns RTLinux and Linux
Networx Inc. owns "Linux Supercomputing." You can also read [1]the full

make friends -- but can you make some really serious enemies? I
disagreed, however, because allegiance to open source depends on who you

industry, you hate open source. You make your money by selling
proprietary solutions: Microsoft and Cisco. If you are No. 3 to No. 10,
you look at open source as a way to get back to those serious RSEUs,
because they are where you make money."

launched a new breed of [0]police 'spy drone'. Originally used in
military applications, these drones are being put into use as a senior
police officer warns the surveillance society in the UK is eroding civil
liberties. In the UK, there are an estimated 4.2 million surveillance
cameras already, and you are on average photographed 300 times a day
going about your business. Is there any evidence to suggest that this
increasingly Orwellian society is actually any safer?"

A state-controlled broadcast center in Russia has just seen the result of
censorship restrictions imposed by the Kremlin. In a rare show of protest
a [0]group of journalists all resigned stating that they could no longer
work under the harsh restrictions imposed by the state. "Artyom Khan, one
of the reporters who resigned, said restrictions were introduced when new
management was imported last month from Channel One, the state television
station that documents Mr Putin's every move."

[1]interoperability project to bridge the gap between China's
domestically developed Uniform Office Format (UOF) and Microsoft's OOXML.
In the continuing tit for tat battle between ODF and OOXML, this
announcement tracks the intent of an already-existing 'harmonization'
committee, hosted by OASIS, that is exploring interoperability options
between ODF and UOF. Like the OOXML-ODF translator project announced by
Microsoft last year, the new effort will be an open source project hosted
by SourceForge. The announcement is, in one sense, no surprise. Microsoft
has been waging a nation-by-nation battle for the hearts and minds of
ISO/IEC JTC1 National Bodies, in an effort to win adoption of OOXML (now
Ecma 376) as a global standard with equal status to ODF (now ISO 26300).
In order to do so, it needs to offset the argument that one document
format standard is not only enough, but preferable. With UOF representing
a third entrant in the format race, easy translation of documents would
obviously be key to lessen the burden on customers of products based upon
one format or the other."

providing a number of state attorney generals with [1]data on registered
sex offenders who use their site. Attorney generals from eight states
demanded last week that the company provide data on how many registered
sex offenders are using the site and where they live. MySpace obtained
the data from Sentinel Tech Holding Corp., which the company partnered
with in December to build a database with information on sex offenders.
Attorneys general in North Carolina, Connecticut, Georgia, Idaho,
Mississippi, New Hampshire, Ohio and Pennsylvania asked for the Sentinel
data last week."
