Packers' Harlan to delay retirement as CEO
Bob Harlan will delay his retirement as the Green Bay Packers'
chief executive officer because hand-picked successor John
Jones is taking a leave for personal reasons. Jones, president
and chief operating officer, was to have taken over for Harlan
next week. The Packers did not elaborate on the reasons Saturday.
Jones had open-heart surgery in June 2006. "It's been a very
difficult year but also a wonderful year in many respects," Jones
said. "I need to step back and recharge my batteries." Peter
Platten, speaking on behalf of the team's executive committee,
said it would be "mutually beneficial for John to take a leave
of absence while we continue our evaluation of the situation and
collectively determine next steps." Harlan was supposed to have
stepped down as CEO but remain board chairman. "We are pleased
that Bob has agreed to provide leadership continuity for the
organization," Platten said. "The executive committee has
tremendous confidence in Bob and his capable staff."
Eagles sign 2 third-round picks
The Philadelphia Eagles signed a pair of third-round picks,
linebacker Stewart Bradley and running back Tony Hunt, to
four-year contracts Thursday. Bradley, the 87th overall pick,
led Nebraska with 76 tackles as a senior after sitting out 2005
with a knee injury. A three-year starter a strong-side linebacker,
Bradley had 175 tackles and four sacks in 43 games for the
Cornhuskers. The Eagles picked Hunt, the second-leading rusher
in Penn State history with 3,320 yards, three picks after they
selected Bradley. Hunt, 21, was a two-time All-Big Ten pick and
scored 28 touchdowns in 45 career games. The Eagles have six
picks left unsigned.

Booker, 2 other rookies sign with Dolphins
Running back Lorenzo Booker was one of three draft picks to
sign four-year contracts Thursday with the Miami Dolphins.
Booker, a former Florida State star, was the Dolphins' third-
round choice. They also signed punter Brandon Fields and
linebacker Abraham Wright, both seventh-round picks. The
Dolphins have signed four of their 10 draft choices. With 2002
NFL rushing champion Ricky Williams unlikely to rejoin Miami,
Booker is expected to back up starting running back Ronnie
Brown this year.
Scott, Sharper excused from Vikings practice
Defensive end Darrion Scott and free safety Darren Sharper were
excused from the Minnesota Vikings' optional "organized team
activities" on Thursday. Sharper left to do some television
work as a color analyst for NFL Europa games and Scott was
excused for "personal reasons," a team spokesman said.
Both players attended the first two days of the four-day OTA,
unlike cornerback Antoine Winfield, who hasn't participated in
any of the team's offseason programs. All of it has been
optional to this point, but Winfield is the only healthy
Viking to have missed all the OTAs this week. Guard Steve
Hutchinson missed the first two days of practice to attend a
charity golf outing, but was in uniform Thursday. Running back
Chester Taylor and linebacker Jason Glenn plan to miss Friday's
workout because of personal reasons. Reasons for Winfield's
absence are unclear. Winfield and his agent, Richard Katz, have
not returned calls seeking comment. The situation will come to
a head on June 1, when the Vikings open a mandatory minicamp.
It is not known if Winfield plans to show up for the minicamp
or training camp.

Bengals coach apologizes for police comments
Cincinnati Bengals coach Marvin Lewis, whose team has had
several run-ins with the law, apologized Thursday for comments
about police possibly targeting his players. "Yesterday, I gave
a radio interview and made some comments that did not illustrate
the high regard I have for the Cincinnati Police Department. I
apologize that what I said did not reflect my true feelings,"
Lewis said. Lewis' statement came a day after a radio interview
that drew a response from Cincinnati Police Chief Tom Streicher.
Talking on Dan Patrick's ESPN radio show about Bengals off-field
problems, Lewis noted that wide receiver Chris Henry was pulled
over in March after not signaling a turn while driving in
Cincinnati. Lewis said he thought such a traffic stop indicated
there was profiling at work. But on Thursday, the Bengals
released a statement from Lewis saying that he didn't believe
Cincinnati police were targeting his players. "At no point did
I say or mean to imply that these issues had anything to do with
race," Lewis said. "When I spoke of our players being perhaps
more subject to scrutiny than others, I was referring to their
standing as public figures." Lewis said the Bengals have had a
good relationship with Cincinnati police and that he has "great
respect" for Streicher and the entire department. He personally
expressed his regret to Streicher. Streicher said that, after
talking with Lewis, he accepted the comments were a case of
something coming out differently than what was meant. "I have
known and respected Marvin since he came to Cincinnati, and in
no way do I feel he would intentionally disparage our department,"
Streicher said in a statement. Henry received traffic tickets on
March 25 for driving with a suspended license, failing to use his
turn signal and a seat belt violation. He was allowed to go into
a license intervention program to settle the charges. The third-
year pro, who has been suspended by the league for the first eight
games of the 2007 season, is among nine Bengals players who were
arrested over a nine-month span. Henry was arrested four times -
none of them in Cincinnati. He was a focus of reports this week
that initially alleged he had failed a drug test. His attorney
and Kentucky state officials said Wednesday that Henry's drug
screenings were clean. They are part of his probations in Orlando,
Fla., for carrying a concealed weapon and in Kenton County, Ky., for
allowing minors to drink in a hotel room he rented.

Niners sign rookie 4th-round pick Cohen
The San Francisco 49ers signed defensive lineman Joe Cohen on
Thursday, inking another fourth-round pick to a four-year contract.
Cohen started 33 games for Florida, including 12 starts at defensive
tackle during the Gators' national championship season. The 310-
pound former offensive lineman will compete for playing time on
the 49ers' young three-man defensive line. The 49ers signed
fellow fourth-round pick Jay Moore to a four-year deal Wednesday.
They are the first two signees from San Francisco's nine-man
draft class.
Texas woman pleads guilty in extortion attempt against Bart Starr
An 81-year-old Texas woman has pleaded guilty to trying to extort
$2 million from Hall of Fame quarterback Bart Starr. Ruby Y. Young
of Kerrville pleaded guilty Friday in U.S. District Court. She
received a probated sentence and agreed not to have any contact
with Starr or his family. Young was accused of mailing letters to
the 73-year-old Starr last year with the intent to extort money
under "a threat to injure the reputation" of the Green Bay Packers'
two-time Super Bowl MVP. The letters threatened to reveal an alleged
relationship they had nearly 50 years ago. Young's attorney said his
client had to plead guilty because of the strong evidence against her.
"Given the facts and the recommendation of probation, there's no
other choice," Guy James Gray said. "The proof was plain and simple."
