Sending music via e-mail?
In comparison, the average MP3 file is 1MB per minute of music. The difference is significant. Nonetheless, MP3 files are still too large to send via e-mail. Many e-mail providers have restrictions on attachment sizes. For example, a 2MB limit isn’t uncommon. In that case, your file probably would not make it through. Besides, large files take a long time to download. So, it is inconsiderate to send them to others. You could clog up someone’s mailbox with music files. There are plenty of other ways to share the music. You could put it on a CD or DVD. This is easy enough. But then you’re left with the problem of shipping the disc. I would upload the files to a site geared to handle them. Such sites include MailBigFile, DropLoad and YouSendIt. You simply upload the files to the site. Recipients will receive a message instructing them to visit the site to download the files. The files can be up to 100MB in size. I would put a number of the files into a Zip file. That will further compress them, making them smaller. By zipping, you can share a number of files at a time. To Zip the files, click the first one to select it. Hold down Shift and click the last one. All of the files will be highlighted. Right-click the highlighted files and select Send To. Click Compressed (zipped) Folder. Also, you could allow people to download the music from your computer. FolderShare is a program that will allow this. Simply install FolderShare and specify which folder contains the music you’d like to share. Add the names of the people who can access it. Then send them an invitation. They’ll need to have FolderShare installed on their machine. No music-sharing Tip would be complete without a discussion of modern legalities. If this music is copyrighted by someone other than your son, you could be violating the law. You might want to consult with a team of lawyers. But if the music is in the public domain, you can share it. Or, if it is music you or your son created, distribute it as you please.Coming up in Monday's Tip: Gray market electronics.
