City Wi-Fi projects hit snarls
Many city Wi-Fi projects across the country are languishing. They have few users due to technical problems. Many network builders underestimated the number of access points needed. And signal strength is often poor indoors.

Google updates Trends service
Google has begun displaying the 100 hottest search topics. Visitors can click any topic to learn more. The list excludes some searches. Pornography and weather searches will be filtered out. So will searches for popular sites and prominent celebrities.

MySpace will share data on sex offenders
MySpace will begin sharing data on sex offenders it has removed from the site. Attorneys general from eight states have requested the information. MySpace said a subpoena was needed to release the data. Several states issued subpoenas. The AGs say the data is needed to protect children online.

Pioneer to help in Internet redesign
BBN Technologies will help with efforts to redesign the Internet from scratch. The company played a key role in the birth of the Internet. Researchers say the Internet should be rebuilt from a clean slate. They say that is the only way to address security and other issues.

Justice Department worried by snitch sites
Sites like Whosarat.com are listing informants and government agents. Authorities worry that these agents and informants could be harmed. The data is collected from electronic court records. Some want tighter controls on these records.

Apple faces suit over screen performance
Two men have filed a lawsuit against Apple alleging deceptive advertising. The suit arises over Apple’s claim that its laptops display millions of colors. The men say that Apple uses software to trick the eye. The lawsuit could gain class action status.

Tools protect against bad Office files
Microsoft has released tools to help protect against malicious Office 2003 files. Vulnerabilities in Office 2003 files could be exploited in a zero-day attack. Microsoft has not yet issued patches to fix the vulnerabilities.

Windows Update misses patches
Users running Office 2007 and Vista may not be fully protected. Windows Update may have missed some of the May security patches. Microsoft recommends running Windows Update again to check for missed patches.
