Humans hard-wired to be generous
A study by government scientists in Washington indicates humans
are hard-wired to be unselfish. Neuroscientists Jorge Moll and
Jordan Grafman of the National Institutes of Health say
experiments they conducted have led them to conclude
unselfishness is not a matter of morality, The Washington
Post reports. Rather, the two say altruism is something that
makes people feel good, lighting up a primitive part of the
human brain that usually responds to food or sex. Grafman
and Moll have been scanning the brains of volunteers who were
asked to think about a scenario involving either donating a sum
of money to charity or keeping it for themselves. They are among
scientists across the United States using imaging and psychological
experiments to study whether the brain has a built-in moral compass.
The results are showing many aspects of morality appear to be hard-
wired in the brain, opening up a new window on what it means to be
good.

Rare albino moose caught on tape
A Norwegian man on a fishing trip in the northern region of
the country captured video footage of a rare albino moose.
Kurt Are Boine Nikkinen said he saw the animal standing in a
field near the road while he was driving in Tanadalen,
Aftenposten reported Monday. "It stood and looked at me,"
Nikkinen said. "It was completely white and had red eyes."
Nikkinen filmed the animal standing in the field and at one
point running along the road before it disappeared into another
field. "It was a great experience to see and film it. It is not
the kind of thing you experience more than once in a lifetime,"
he said. Nikkinen, a hunter, said he would never shoot a white
moose. "It would make a special trophy but it won't be on my wall.
Such a fine animal should be protected," he said.

UPI Poll: Chinese space program a threat
More than 60 percent of respondents to a UPI-Zogby International
polled said the Chinese space program represents a threat to
U.S. security. With 22 percent of participants strongly agreeing
and 41.8 percent somewhat agreeing with the statement that the
Chinese space program presents a threat to American security,
there is an obvious concern about the program. China is one of
three nations to have launched manned spacecraft. Last year,
Chinese officials set out a manned-flight plan for both lunar
and Mars exploration. The China's space program has also proven
satellite and military applications. A total of 28.9 percent --
23.6 percent somewhat disagreeing and 5.3 percent strongly
disagreeing -- of those asked disagree that China's space
program is a threat to the United States. The Zogby interactive
poll of 5,141 U.S. residents was carried out May 16-18 and has
a margin of error of 1.4 percentage points.
