XM Satellite Radio suspended shock jocks Opie and Anthony
for salacious comments during their program but the pair
can be heard on New York's WFNY-FM.

XM Radio slapped the 30-day suspension on Opie and Anthony
over comments made last week by a homeless man about
having sex with first lady Laura Bush, Secretary of State
Condoleezza Rice and Queen Elizabeth II, the satellite
radio network said in a release Tuesday on its Web site.

Because the comments were broadcast on XM, the pair's
WFNY-FM show would continue, said CBS Radio, which owns
the station.

XM is not under FCC content restrictions. However, in a
statement issued Friday, XM said it "deplored" the
comments and "on-air talent must take seriously the
responsibility that creative freedom requires of them."

Opie and Anthony apologized Friday. They complained
on-air Monday that content guidelines were repressive,
drawing the suspension. In a statement, XM said,
"Comments on (Monday's) broadcast ... put into question
whether they appreciate the seriousness of the matter."

What are your thoughts on XM Satellite Radio suspending
shock jocks Opie and Anthony?

P.S. Still no new update on the forums.

See you at the water cooler,
Jeanie

Greek, Polish out in Olympic welcome ads
Chicago's Olympic committee has dropped Polish and the
Olympics' native language, Greek, from planned ads
welcoming visitors for the 2016 Games. There are 11 ads
saying "Welcome to Chicago" in Arabic, Chinese, French,
German, Italian, Japanese, Korean, Portuguese, Russian,
Spanish and Swahili, but committee spokesman Patrick
Sandusky said Greek was dropped as there was disagreement
over how to say the welcome properly, the Chicago Tribune
reported. While it's not certain Chicago will win hosting
rights, the committee is busy preparing for the possibility
by preparing the newspaper ads. However, the newspaper
questioned why Polish was excluded, considering the city
has a very large Polish population. Asked why Swahili
would be included while Polish was out, Sandusky offered
only a brief explanation. "Well, we didn't have room for
everybody," he said.

Fed: Halifax airport not French enough
The Canadian commissioner of official languages has
censured Nova Scotia's Halifax airport for not providing
enough services in French. In a report in which 37
institutions across Canada were visited by language
inspectors, the Atlantic city's Robert L. Stanfield
International Airport ranked highest for complaints about
too much English, the Canadian Broadcasting Corp., reported
Wednesday. The Official Languages Act of 1969 stipulates
Canadians' right to receive federal government services
in either English or French where numbers warrant.
However, Commissioner Graham Fraser said there are not
enough French signs at the Halifax airport and some
inspectors found no one could help them with service in
French. Based on federal statistics from 2001, 11.5
percent of people in Halifax are bilingual.

Miami Beach seeks sand overseas
Officials in Miami Beach, Fla., are looking for foreign
sources of new sand after the usual methods of replenishing
the beaches dried up. Community leaders say they have
received offers of sand from the Dominican Republic, the
Turks and Caicos Islands and Mexico, the Christian Science
Monitor reported Wednesday. For example, a fish farm in
the Dominican Republic is offering to sell Miami Beach the
sand dredged outs while digging new fish ponds. The
search for sand follows an end to the beach's usual
offshore sources of sand. Three sensitive coral reefs
running parallel to the coastline are threatened by sand
pumping and sources in other areas are growing thin. The
city tried to make a deal for sand from up the coast in
St. Lucie County, Fla., but residents there reacted
harshly to the idea of losing their sand. "If we have
one more hurricane we're going to need an external
source," Brian Flynn, an administrator in the Miami-Dade
County Department of Environmental Resources Management,
told the Monitor. "We're the first county that's
essentially run out of sand. Broward County to our north
is right behind us. They've probably got one more project
and they're going to be out."

Question of the Week</a>

What are your thoughts on MySpace wanting Subpoenas
for information regarding sex offenders who are
members of MySpace?

"I don't blame MySpace in the least!! All they have to
do is release one name erroneously without a subpoena and
they'll be sued out of business. Besides, not everyone
uses correct names when registering - they can't guarantee
they'll be able to match the names anyway. I personally
love MySpace (yes, even though I'm over 50), but like
anything, there are the relative few who misuse it.
People have been scamming for generations (doesn't anyone
recall phone scams?), so why blame the medium. Blame
those who are taking advantage of it with criminal intent."

"As a member of the MySpace community, my question is
this--since MySpace has a search option for finding
people, by either their name, their display name (a
nick-name for example) or by their e-mail address. why
would different states need to have a subpoena? Obviously
if this people are registered sex offenders the state has
their first and last name--and last I knew most rap sheets
also included aliases. So, all that would need to be done
is, log into MySpace and do a search for a certain name
within a certain area. Granted this may not help to find
each and every one of them, but I'm sure a large portion
of them could be discovered this way. And with so many
people communicating via e-mail and other internet messaging
sites I foresee it being someday soon when rap sheets not
only includes names and aliases, but also e-mail addresses."

"I think there should be some sort of amendment to that
law. Sex offenders are required to register their address
and things with the state, county, city and that is
available online to us. However, with the ever growing
world wide web, times and ways of communication have
changed. I mean, if a pedophile decides to start talking
to a 12 year old girl because he liked her picture on
myspace, more than likely if he pretends she is going to
gossip about what school she goes to, her friends, her
hang outs, etc…..and I think that's just too close to
home. I'm not saying they need to wear a scarlet letter,
but we need to have some way to identify them because the
statistics are high on sex offenders not being able to be
rehabilitated."
