Hot News Headlines
Impressive. After taking a first look at the new MacBook computers, James Galbraith (Macworld) reports that the changes found in the new systems “translate to faster machines.” One can “credit the jump in performance over the previous edition of the MacBook,” he says, “to Core 2 Duo processors with slightly faster clock speeds as well as new hard drives.”

As Playlist’s Peter Cohen reports, fans of the hit ABC drama, Lost, can now purchae and download a game from Gameloft based on the hit television show. “In the ‘Lost’ game, you play as Jack, and interact with other characters including Kate, Locke and Sayid as you explore the island’s main sites — including the beach, jungle, inside the Hatch and the Black Rock. You relive events such as the crash scene, running from the black smoke and meeting the Others.”

When speed’s the key, Aperture delivers the prize

Robert Leslie and Aperture Not the best fit for the faint of heart, event photography threatens elbow-to-elbow competition, impossibly short deadlines, and seemingly endless dashes from one gala to the next. And that’s just the sort of workaholic milieu in which Robert Leslie thrives.

Especially since discovering how Aperture’s robust and efficient workflows lets him speed his way through the selection process and speed his selects on their way to clients.

“At a major event, I might easily capture thousands of images,” explains Leslie. “From that content I’ll get down to around 900 selects, and then top-rated images will be heading straight out to Web sites and press.” And Aperture powers that madcap workflow. “The capacity to have really fast turnaround and deliver a selection of images to the client within hours has been a huge change in the way that I work.”

Redefining the solo album

Ari Hest and GarageBand You could call The Green Room Sessions a uniquely personal album. Yes, solo albums abound, and many artists can proudly point to their own solo efforts. But not many can claim to have crafted an album quite as solely as Hest.

After all, the singer-songwriter not only wrote all but one of the songs appearing on The Green Room Sessions. He also was the sole artist, cutting all vocal, acoustic guitar, electric guitar, bass, keyboard, harmonica, and percussion tracks himself. A DIY advocate to the core, Hest even assumed all the recording, mixing, and producing duties himself.

And he accomplished it all, not in an equipment-packed studio, but in his Brooklyn apartment. Using his MacBook Pro and GarageBand.

A template for success

A template for success “The beauty of Pages is its flexibility,” says Sara France, who runs Sara France Photography, a thriving wedding and portrait photography studio in San Diego, CA.

“First,” she says, “it’s an extremely efficient word processor—with all the features I need to run my business, yet none of the typical complexity. At the same time, it’s powerful design software, with templates that give me a fantastic starting point for creating and marketing my own brand—and making it stick in people’s minds.”

And France leverages those templates heavily. In fact, they’re the basis of one of her most popular products, customized DVD covers and booklets for the photo DVDs she gives clients. “I can launch a template, drag a few images in, and Pages resizes them automatically,” And that’s not the only way Pages offers France a template for business success.
