[0]goldcd writes "A while back I wrote some pretty reasonable forum code,
a PHPBB alternative. A few years down the line it's pretty stable, I've
stopped tinkering with it, and it's standing up by itself. I have neither
the time, inclination, nor inspiration to do anything more with it, but
would very much like to give the code to the world to use and expand
upon. Now I could just upload it as it is onto SourceForge, but currently
it's very specific in its usage and I'd be ashamed of what 'proper'
coders would think of my amateur offering I'm afraid it would be
laughed at and ignored. On the other hand, I don't want to waste hours of
my own time perfecting it for people just to 'rip off' as is, and never
contribute anything. My question is, what do you have to do to make your
code 'OSS appealing?'"

The Washington Post has an article detailing what is known of the
[0]workings of the Russian Business Network, a shadowy entity based in
St. Petersburg that hosts a good fraction of the world's spammers,
identity thieves, bot herders, and phishers. RBN is not incorporated
anywhere and may not technically even be violating Russian law. It
provides "bulletproof hosting" for about $600 a month to a wide range of
bad guys. The author of the Post story, Brian Krebs, supplements it with
two blog posts. One provides [1]more detail and back story including a
look at one ISP's security admin who decided last summer to ban all RBN
traffic from his network, with outstanding results. The other post maps
some of the RBN's upstream suppliers and details the extent of the RBN's
involvement in recent cyber-attacks: "Nearly every major advancement in
computer viruses or worms over the past two years has emanated from or
sent stolen consumer data back to servers" in the RBN.

[0]Xight notes a Gizmodo story that is a few days old but hasn't gotten a
lot of play. It seems that Nigeria recently [1]denied Bill Gates a visa
to travel there on his recent trip to Africa. The initial denial was "on
the premise that they required proof he would not reside in Nigeria
indefinitely, causing a strain on social services and a general nuisance
for immigration." The comments to the post are worth reading too.

The Register is reporting on developments in a California court case
pitting blind users against the retailer Target over the [0]lack of
accessibility of Target.com. (We discussed the matter on [1]two
[2]occasions last year.) The case is being brought under a federal
statute, the Americans With Disabilities Act, and two California laws
that are somewhat broader. Even though Target has made improvements to
the site since losing the first phase in court, the judge has just ruled
that the case is eligible for class-action status. The end result could
be mandated accessibility for for all Web sites reachable by visually
impaired users in California.

Business Week attempts to read into the [2]silence of software developers
(who are all, presumably, under NDA) to triangulate Google's plans. Both
outlets agree that Google is probably developing its own Linux-based OS
for the gPhone, and that it will be open to outside developers.

[0]there was a presentation on what to expect in the next major milestone
for their Microsoft Office competitor. "The presentation mentions
bundling Thunderbird with their Office Suite, and refers to it as an
'Outlook replacement.' This is all assuming that Thunderbird recently
losing two of its main developers doesn't affect the decision, because
I'm sure OpenOffice wants to ensure that Thunderbird will continue to
progress before including it." This probably won't sway large
corporations away from using Microsoft Office, but it could make it more
intriguing for the smaller businesses that are looking to cut some
costs."

Pogue and we wish the [4]industry standard would change." Personally I
think this is why blogs are great- if a product sells 100,000 units, it
only takes a few dozen bloggers to encounter problems for the truth to
come out. Of course, that doesn't help you if you want to pre-order.

"our affiliates, agents and parent companies (including Vodafone) and
their subsidiaries." The article explains that CPNI "includes the numbers

data." Some subscribers, it's not known if it's all of them, received a
letter in the mail giving them 30 days to opt out of this sharing by

seems to have been the first to [1]call attention to the Verizon

[0]RedDragon writes "Ubuntu 7.10 is due out on Thursday, October 18, and
in addition to desktop 3D effects, GNOME 2.20, and other features is the
use of the Linux 2.6.22 kernel with the tick-less (CONFIG_NO_HZ) kernel
feature. But does this mean enhanced power savings when compared to past
Ubuntu releases? Phoronix [1]tested Ubuntu power consumption looking back
2-1/2 years at the six Ubuntu releases from Ubuntu 5.04 to the
yet-to-be-released Ubuntu 7.10. Testing was done when the system was
idling and then under load, and when the Lenovo notebook was powered via
the battery and then again with the AC adapter. The Pentium M CPU
temperature was also monitored. While Ubuntu 7.10 does include the
tick-less kernel feature, more daemons and processes running by default
on these modern Ubuntu releases is actually causing an increase in power
consumption."

The online edition of the British journal Nature Medicine has a study of
a [0]blood test for Alzheimer's disease, developed at Stanford. The test
lights up if 18 specific molecules are present in a blood sample. Using
samples of stored blood, the test proved 90% accurate in identifying
people who had been diagnosed with the disease by other methods. It was
also 87% accurate in distinguishing samples from people who do not have
Alzheimer's but exhibit some other form of dementia. The numbers of
samples involved were small SFGate's writeup [1]has some details. The
Mercury News's article says the test's developers want to begin selling
it to laboratories in 2008, for which FDA approval would not be required.
They hope to get FDA approval for general use by 2009.

Space Office, calls for funding the development of space-based solar
power culminating in 'a platform in geosynchronous orbit bigger than the
international space station and capable of beaming 5-10 megawatts of
power to a receiving station on the ground.' The Pentagon's interest in
such an effort stems from the need to acquire energy on the battlefield,
which today often comes at a painful premium."
