[0]netbuzz writes "The director of Microsoft's Open Source Lab, Bill
Hilf, has [1]added a new duty general manager of Windows server
marketing to his already established role of shepherding the company's
efforts to have open source software peacefully coexist with Microsoft
technologies. What the company calls a 'natural evolution' of Hilf's job
description may not be considered quite so natural among segments of the
open source community that eye every Microsoft move with suspicion if not
hostility." Bill Hilf [2]answered Slashdot's questions two years back and
sounded quite friendly to OSS; yet at other times he has come off like a
[3]hardcore Microsoftie.

[0]Hugh Pickens writes "The difference in coloring between Iapetus'
leading and trailing hemispheres is striking. NASA's Jet Propulsion Labs
has just released a report on a [1]bizarre 'runaway' process that may
explain the strange and dramatically [2]two-toned appearance recently
revealed in images collected during a close flyby by the Cassini
spacecraft. Scientists believe that initially dark material on one side
of Iapetus may have come from other moons orbiting Saturn in the opposite
direction. Since Iapetus is locked in synchronous rotation about Saturn,
as dusty material from the outer moons spiraled in and hit Iapetus
head-on, the forward-facing side began to darken. As it absorbed more
sunlight, its surface water evaporated, and vapor was transported from
the dark side to the white side of Iapetus. Thermal segregation then
proceeded in a runaway process as the dark side lost its surface ice and
got darker still. Now the leading hemisphere is as dark as a tarred
street and the trailing hemisphere resembles freshly fallen snow."

politics is playing out in Canada. Short background: various Canadian
cities and municipalities have launched a publicity/lobbying campaign
seeking a fixed take from the GST (Goods and Services Tax, a national
Canadian sales tax similar to European VAT). The amount sought is 1 cent
for each dollar of the purchase price. This is summarized by the slogan
'One Cent of the GST NOW.' According to a press release, the Royal
Canadian Mint (the federal agency that prints Canadian paper currency and
stamps Canadian coins) has demanded from the City of Toronto $47,680 in
[0]royalties for use of the phrase 'one cent', and the image of the
Canadian penny. $10,000 covers the use of the words 'one cent' in the
campaign website address (www.onecentnow.ca) and email address
(onecentnow@toronto.ca). An additional $10,000 is demanded for the use of
these words in the campaign phone number (416-ONE-CENT). The remaining
$27,680 covers the use of the image of the Canadian penny in printed
materials such as pins and posters." Here's a [1]National Post article on

The New York Times has a lengthy look at an unorthodox way to spread the
religious word: [0] Halo 3 multiplayer matches. Churches across the
country have adopted 'Halo Nights' as a way to get kids together in
religious centers and church basements. "The alliance of popular culture
and evangelism is challenging churches much as bingo games did in the
1960s. And the question fits into a rich debate about how far churches
should go to reach young people. Far from being defensive, church leaders
who support Halo -- despite its "thou shalt kill" credo -- celebrate it
as a modern and sometimes singularly effective tool. It is crucial, they
say, to reach the elusive audience of boys and young men." Just the same,
the use of the game is raising concerns among some onlookers.
GamePolitics reports that many [1]faith communities are heavily debating
the issue.

An anonymous reader writes "Cosmos Magazine reports on a design for a
[0]lunar habitat that is 90 to 95 percent self-sufficient. The
[1]proposed habitat uses a closed-loop life support system that recycles
and regenerates air, water, and food, reducing the need for costly supply
trips. The north pole of the moon is chosen as a location because of its
access to sunlight and useful resources. About 11 astronauts could live
and work in the habitat for 2 to 3 years. The project would also help the
environment on Earth with recycling and other sustainable practices." The
designers say it could be 20 to 30 years before such a habitat could be
up and running on the moon.

[0]apokryphos writes "Novell's long journey from NetWare to Linux is
finally complete, with Open Enterprise Server 2.0. Linux-Watch takes a
look at the [1]newly-released OES 2.0: 'Now, with OES 2.0, the NetWare
operating system kernel, NetWare 6.5 SP7, is still there if you run it,
but it runs on top of the Xen hypervisor. You can also run the NetWare
services, or a para-virtualized instance of NetWare, on top of Xen with
the SLES (SUSE Linux Enterprise Server) 10 SP 1 kernel. So, if you're
wedded to NetWare and its way of doing things, you don't have to wave
good-bye to it.'"

[0]URSpider alerts us to two separate research reports published in the
Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences pointing to the [1]rapid
breakdown of nitric oxide in donated blood as a reason why such blood
loses its ability to transfer oxygen, and is sometime implicated in
problems such as strokes and heart attacks. Nitric oxide depletion is
significant after 3 hours of storage; yet current guidelines allow for
storing donated blood for up to 42 days. The article notes: "Several of
the researchers, including Stamler, have consulting and/or equity
relationships with Nitrox/N30, a company developing nitric oxide based
therapies."

[0]Lauren Weinstein writes to tell us that GM will be installing OnStar
systems on almost 1.7 million 2009-model cars that will allow law
enforcement (or anyone who cracks the system) to [1]remotely shut down
vehicles. Here is the [2]AP's writeup, which like most MSM coverage
doesn't mention any privacy implications.

Da Massive writes in with a link to a story on [0]KOffice 2.0, the next
generation of the KDE office suite due sometime next year. In an
interview with KDE spokesman Sebastian Kugler, Computerworld reports that
KOffice 2.0 will be leaner, faster, and enjoy a cleaner code base than
OpenOffice. It will also feature more applications, including an
Access-like database creator, a flowcharter, and an image manipulation
tool. KOffice is not yet fully compatible with ODF but the claim is that
2.0 will be.
