[0]hhavensteincw writes "Intel has quietly launched a [1]new online
community that it plans to use to take feedback and suggestions from OEMs
and end users for new features in its vPro chips and management software.
Intel envisions that the community will grow to allow users to get
answers from other community members faster than Intel's support group
can answer questions."

While Mindbridge didn't start out as an open source company, it has since
managed to save what they can only describe as "bunches of money" by
[0]switching to Linux. "Today, Mindbridge has repurposed itself as an
open-source-friendly company, and revamped its infrastructure to run
completely on Linux and other open source software. 'Having deployed
[Linux servers] to our customers, we turned around and said, we can do
the same thing internally and save bunches of money. We began a
systematic but slow flipping of servers from the Microsoft world over to
predominantly Linux although there are a few BSD boxes around as well,'
Christian says. 'It's to the point that today I only have two production
Windows servers left, out of 15 or so.'"

designed to [0]empower cell phone customers across the nation by
providing more protections and guaranteed options. "The Cell Phone
Consumer Empowerment Act of 2007 will require wireless service providers
to share simple, clear information on their services and charges with
customers before they enter into long-term contracts; a thirty-day window
in which to exit a contract without early termination fees; and greater
flexibility to exit contracts with services that don't meet their needs."

[0]slick_shoes writes to mention that Italian researcher Giovanni Murtas
has taken another step towards [1]creating life in a test tube. "To the
untrained eye, the tiny, misshapen, fatty blobs on Giovanni Murtas's
microscope slide would not look very impressive. But when the Italian
scientist saw their telltale green fluorescent glint he knew he had
achieved something remarkable and taken a vital step towards building a
living organism from scratch. The green glow was proof that his fragile
creations were capable of making their own proteins, a crucial ability of
all living things and vital for carrying out all other aspects of life."

watchingeyes writes "In a ruling on various pre-trial motions in limine
and other, similar motions in the SCO vs Novell case, Judge Kimball today
issued a ruling [0]striking SCO's demand for a jury trial, ruling that
Novell's claims seek equitable, and not legal relief. In addition, he
denied SCO's request for entry of judgment that would allow them to
appeal his ruling on the UNIX copyrights and Novell's waiver rights,
ruling that if SCO wants to appeal any of his rulings, it can do them all
at once after trial. He also granted Novell's request to voluntarily
dismiss its own breach of contract claim, denied SCO's motion to exclude
press coverage and evidence from the IBM case, granted Novell's motion in
limine preventing SCO from contesting his summary judgment ruling at
trial, granted Novell's second motion in limine preventing SCO from
arguing that SCOsource licenses that license SVRx only incidentally
aren't SVRx licenses, denied another SCO motion in limine which
improperly asked the Judge to issue rulings on contractual issues and
denied Novell's final motion in limine which sought to prevent SCO from
contesting Novell's apportionment of royalties analysis. Looks like SCO
will be facing a trial in-front of a judge which has already ruled
against them numerous times."

attorneys' [2]plea for a 1 p.m. ET start time drew a

has fallen into disfavor lately with USPTO Examiners, who no longer have
the same boss who once [4]sent a 1-Click love letter to the WSJ arguing
that the merits of Amazon's patent were proven by a contest run by a
[5]Jeff Bezos-financed company, an argument that was later [6]rejected by
Congress."

(1920x1080 resolution). Moving a hand across the surface pans the

[0]microchip implants have induced cancer in laboratory animals and dogs.
A series of research articles spanning more than a decade found that mice
and rats injected with glass-encapsulated RFID transponders developed
malignant, fast-growing, lethal cancers in up to 1% to 10% of cases. The
tumors originated in the tissue surrounding the microchips and often grew
to completely surround the devices. To date, about 2,000 RFID devices
have been implanted in humans worldwide, according to VeriChip Corp." We
recently discussed the [1]California ban on companies requiring such
implants.

[0]Hugh Pickens writes "Almost thirty years ago I worked in the Middle
East helping install a nationwide communications system and had the
opportunity to be part of a team doing microwave link tests across
[1]Saudi Arabia's Empty Quarter. Something I've never forgotten were the
astonishing nights I spent in the desert hundreds of miles from the
nearest city where the absence of light made looking at the sky on a
moonless night feel like you were floating in the middle of the galaxy.
In Galileo's time, nighttime skies all over the world would have merited
the darkest Bortle ranking, Class 1. Today, the sky above New York City
is Class 9 and American suburban skies are typically Class 5, 6, or 7.
The very darkest places in the continental United States today are almost
never darker than Class 2, and are increasingly threatened. Read a story
from the New Yorker on [2]what we have lost to light pollution and how
some cities are adopting outdoor lighting standards to save the
darkness."
