M Saunders writes "Not long after we enjoyed playing with the device at
[0]LinuxWorld 2007, Palm has announced that it is [1]shelving the Foleo
handheld PC, before it was due to ship, so that the company can focus on
a 'next-generation platform.' Palm hasn't ruled out a 'Foleo II' at some
point, but for those of us looking forward to dinky Linux-powered laptops
it's a bit of a disappointment. Still, with the [2]Asus Eee PC nearby
and at a very low price point perhaps it was a sensible move by Palm."

[0]Raver32 sends us to space.com for first light on the [1]design of New
Mexico's Spaceport America. Quoting: "The winning design is the work of
URS Corporation a large design and engineering enterprise teamed with
Foster + Partners of the United Kingdom, a group with extensive
experience in crafting airport buildings. When the 100,000 square-foot
facility is completed the centerpiece of the world's first,
purpose-built, commercial spaceport the structures will serve as the
primary operating base for Sir Richard Branson's Virgin Galactic
suborbital spaceliner, and also as the headquarters for the New Mexico

second-order wave equation, preferably in three space dimensions. A lot
of googling has not revealed much on what I had assumed would be a
well-studied problem. Most of the standard numerical methods, [2]finite
difference/[3]finite element methods, don't seem to work very well in the
case of variable wave speed at different points in the domain, which is
exactly the case that I need. Are any in this community working on
numerically solving wave equation problems? What numerical methods do you
use, and which programs do you find best suited to the task? How do you
deal with stability issues, boundary/initial values, and other pitfalls?
Are there different methods for electromagnetic wave problems? Finally,
when the numbers have all been crunched, how do you visualize your
hard-earned data?"

lottameez recommends an article in the Washington Post about recent
[0]research into the persistence of myths. In short: once a myth has been
put out there (e.g., "Saddam Hussein plotted the 9/11 attacks"), denying
it can paradoxically reinforce its staying power. Ignoring it doesn't
work either a claim that is unchallenged gains the ring of truth. Over
time, "negation tags" fall out of memory: "Saddam didn't plan 9/11"
becomes "Saddam planned 9/11." From the article: "The conventional
response to myths and urban legends is to counter bad information with
accurate information. But the new psychological studies show that denials
and clarifications, for all their intuitive appeal, can paradoxically
contribute to the resiliency of popular myths... The research is painting
a broad new understanding of how the mind works. Contrary to the
conventional notion that people absorb information in a deliberate
manner, the studies show that the brain uses subconscious 'rules of
thumb' that can bias it into thinking that false information is true.
Clever manipulators can take advantage of this tendency."

Many readers informed us about the opinion of Lord Justice Sedley, a
senior UK Appeal Court judge, who said that [0]everyone in the UK should
have their DNA recorded in the national database including visitors.
Reader ChiefGeneralManager writes, "Sedley calls the current database
'indefensible' because it contains a hodge-podge mix of people, including
children and those who have been in contact with the police. His view is
that we should make it compulsory for all DNA to be recorded to remove
this anomaly. The UK Information Commissioner has expressed some
concerns, but not dismissed the idea outright." And reader john.wingfield
adds, "Just under two weeks ago, the Independent reported that the
Government has admitted that [1]an eighth of all records on the DNA
database are false, misspelled, or incorrect over half a million
records. This raises the possibility of a breach of the [2]4th data
protection principle of the Data Protection Act 1998: 'Personal data
shall be accurate and, where necessary, kept up to date.'"

[0]Tapani Tarvainen writes "It turns out there's an [1]interesting
correlation between Transparency International's '[2]corruption
perceptions index' and voting behavior in ISO's OOXML decision. Countries
with a lower score (more corruption) on the 2006 CPI were more likely to
vote in favor of OOXML, and those with a higher score were less likely.
According to the analysis, 'This statistics supports with a P value of
0.07328 the hypothesis that the corrupted countries were more likely to
vote for approval (one-tailed Fisher's Exact test). In other words,
simplified a bit: the likelihood that there was no positive correlation
between the corruption level and probability of an approval vote, that
is, this is just a random effect, is about 7%.' Of course, correlation
doesn't prove causality."

[0]narramissic writes "Microsoft is [1]tying its Windows Live services
directly to Vista a move that should sound vaguely familiar, as it is
precisely what the company did to make IE ubiquitous among Internet
users. 'A new unified installer for Windows Live services will help users
download Wednesday's updates of photo-sharing, mail, instant messaging,
online safety and other services, the company said on its [2]Windows Live
Wire blog. The new installer also will automatically update those
services on Windows Vista and XP going forward.'"

[0]AdamWill writes "The first release candidate of Mandriva Linux 2008,
codenamed Galilee, [1]is now available. The [2]release notes are also
available via the wiki. A guide to [3]major new features (some of which
are not yet implemented in this release candidate), and the [4]detailed
technical specifications are also available. This release candidate is
available as a three CD or one DVD Free edition (containing no non-free
software or drivers) for the x86-32 and x86-64 architectures, with a
traditional installer, and as a mini-CD edition for both x86-32 and
x86-64 architectures. A One combined live / install CD edition will be
released in the near future (problems with unionfs prevented the One
edition from being release at the same time as the other editions)."
