CONTACT: Columbus, OH (BlackNews.com) - Uzuri Kid Kidz has just released a new character for its already existing line of multicultural party supplies for children. Princess Amira is the company's first African American princess character. She was created for children whose faces are not reflected in popular children's multimedia products marketed to young girls. The idea originated two years ago by Uzuri Kid Kidz founders, Melissa Perkins and Adria Fields, as a response to the lack of role models of color for children. According to media buzz, a major studio's animated film featuring their first black princess is underway for release in 2009, however, Perkins believes this is long overdue. "The addition of a black princess to the famous collection of animated princesses makes good sense and is the right thing to do," says Perkins. "It's just a shame that it has taken so long for the market to realize that African American females are just as beautiful and as marketable as the Asian, Caucasian, Native American, and Middle Eastern characters already promoted in their films and products distributed throughout the world. The harmful message that has been sent to African American children who will pass the stage of interest in fairy tales and princesses before the release of the first major black princess is even more disturbing." Uzuri Kid Kidz launched a full line of multicultural party supplies for children in July 2004 in an effort to provide an alternative to the prominence of Caucasian characters featured on similar products in party stores. "The American child today is as diverse as the colors of the rainbow," says Fields. "Our design strategy is based on providing characters with which every child can identify regardless of race, gender, or ethnicity." Currently, the company's multicultural collection includes Penny & Pepper, Princess Amira, Trey, Ballerina Babes, Candi, and Nice Girls. The ability of large business operations to market new multicultural heroines and their likeness on consumer products is bound to take its toll on the sales success of Princess Amira produced by the small, minority business of Uzuri Kid Kidz. However, if more children are able to identify with and see themselves through the new characters then Perkins feels that she has succeeded. Uzuri Kid Kidz party supplies and other products can be purchased through their website at www.uzurikidkidz.com and at selected locations throughout the United States.
